What is UMCOR's main role in alleviating hunger and poverty?
Eradication of the root causes is the goal. A holistic approach-with attention to health, nutrition, decent prices, appropriate technology, training, and sustainability-is the method. More than 800 million people in the world go hungry every day in a world that has unparalleled wealth and food production capacity. It is not a question of whether there is enough food but a matter of accessibility and equal distribution to all people.
How are hunger and disease related?
As an example, seven million agricultural workers in Africa have died of HIV/AIDS since 1985. Sixteen million more deaths are likely in the next two decades, seriously affecting agriculture and education. In addition nearly 2.5 billion of the world's 6.3 billion people lack access to basic sanitation. One billion people lack access to safe drinking water. Contaminated water kills 2.2 million people per year.
Who is at risk in the United States?
Under-weight-malnutrition-remains the leading cause of disease and death in the world. More than 33 million people, including 13 million children, live in households in the United States that experience hunger or are at risk of hunger. (US Census)
For seven cents per American per day hunger could be cut in half in the United States and worldwide by 2015. Please give from the heart. Your generous contributions can help to stimulate action, empower vulnerable people, and bring hope.
